On Sunday (1/19/14) I ordered an MSI Radeon R9 290X. I obsessively tracked the Fedex order, refreshing the page on Wednesday (1/22/14) morning to see that it had just landed in Fairbanks, Alaska and was scanned upon arrival at the local Fedex shipping facility. I immediately drove to the facility to pick up my card as not to waste any precious mining time.
To my dismay, the card had no chance of fitting in the older Dell desktop I worked on setting up for the mining project. I contacted my friend in town with much knowledge about mining. Soon I had the riser I needed to begin the six hour long process of setting up the mine.
Taking apart the computer and transferring a good amount of the innards to another computer, soldering, playing with the bios settings, and installing drivers was all very intense. Finally, the card was mining with cgminer at about 850 kHash, about 100 kHash less than I was hoping to initially achieve. Installing a modified version of cgminer 3.7.2 and playing with the settings in the .conf file and MSI Afterburner lead to a final kHash value of about 960. It was time to bring the device home.
After dealing with a few screen problems, I was able to stabilize the mine in my office at home. What noise and heat it produced! Being located Alaska right now allowed me to crack the window and solve the heat problem almost instantly. After testing the mine on multipool.us and successfully mining some Dogecoin, another coin caught my attention. What was this Mooncoin?
Since it was my first night mining and nothing was guaranteed to be working when I woke up, I allocated all my resources to mine this mysterious Mooncoin…
In the Morning:
My computer sleep settings stopped my Mooncoin mining operation about an hour after I fell asleep. Mooncoin also became more difficult to mine so my share payout decreased after I started mining again. Setting a threshold value for deposit directly into my coinex.pw has been working well.
What excitement! Mining with a high powered GPU in this volatile alt-coin market is very exciting. Who knows what the future will bring for Mooncoin and Dogecoin, but something tells me it will be exciting.
